Why 800-359-4107 Keeps Showing Up on Your Phone

800-359-4107 is a phone number associated with debt collection calls. The calls are from Midland Credit Management.

MCM is calling you because they think you owe them money. They may or may not have the correct information on you or the debt. If you are getting calls from this phone number, you are not alone.

MCM is one of the most complained about debt collection agencies. RoboKiller has recorded over 38,000 calls from this phone number. There have been 286 complaints about this phone number, and every complaint is negative.

Before you answer the call, before you call back, and before you do anything, you need to know who is calling and what options you have.

Who Is Midland Credit Management?

Midland Credit Management is a debt collection agency. MCM is a debt-buying company. It purchases charged-off consumer debts for pennies on the dollar and attempts to collect the full face value. The company is owned by Encore Capital Group. Encore Capital is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Midland Credit Management is the largest publicly-traded debt-buying company in the United States. The company employs over 7,350 people worldwide and earns over $1.3 billion in revenue each year.

Midland Credit Management primarily collects credit card debt. The company works with Chase, Citibank, Capital One, Discover, Synchrony Bank, and others. They also collect telecom debt, utility debt, personal loan debt, some medical debt, and some auto debt.

MCM operates in all 50 states. The company has 24 office locations throughout the United States. It also has operations in India and Costa Rica. The Better Business Bureau has given Midland Credit an A rating. The company is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has received over 17,000 complaints about Encore Capital in the last year.

History of Complaints and Controversies

Midland Credit Management has a history of complaints and controversies.

In 2015, the CFPB found that MCM had engaged in illegal activities. The company was collecting payments by making false statements. They were attempting to collect debts when they knew the information might be inaccurate. They were filing lawsuits using robo-signed court documents. Affidavits were being signed by employees who were processing up to 400 affidavits a day without reviewing them.

The CFPB made MCM provide $42 million in relief to consumers. The company was assessed a $10 million civil penalty. MCM was ordered to stop collecting on more than $125 million in debts.

In 2020, the CFPB sued MCM again for violating the consent order. The company was ordered to pay another $15 million.

Midland Credit Management paid $20.5 million for a Telephone Consumer Protection Act class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit was for making robocalls without consent to about 41 million consumers.

In 2018, 42 state attorneys generals settled claims against MCM for robo-signing. The company had to provide millions of dollars more in debt relief.

All told, Midland Credit Management has been responsible for between $275 and $300 million in penalties and debt relief.

Why Is Midland Credit Management Calling Me?

Midland Credit Management calls people because it thinks they owe a debt. MCM does not work for the original creditor. The company purchases charged-off debts for pennies on the dollar. Between 2009 and 2015, Encore Capital acquired about 60 million accounts with a face value of $128 billion. The company paid about $4 billion for those accounts. That works out to be about 3 to 10 cents on the dollar.

That means the debt that MCM is calling you about may have been sold and resold many times. Each time a debt is sold, the balance, account holder, or identifying information may be incorrect. Midland Credit Management is not a company that you borrowed money from. It is a company that bought your debt at a discount and wants you to pay to make a profit.

What Do They Want From Me?

Midland Credit Management wants you to pay a debt. The company may or may not have accurate information about the debt. Many people who have dealt with MCM say the company is counting on you not to know the debt is incorrect or not yours. The company is hoping you will panic and pay without verifying information.

One person who dealt with MCM on 800Notes said, “Shawn Wayne stated I owed $596 to Discount Auto Store in the year March 6, 2021. I stated I did not have this credit nor bought tires for anyone at that time. He stated my old address also my birth date. Still I declined and called Discount Auto and they told me no credit cards issued in my name.” The caller had the man’s personal information but not the correct debt information.

What Are Other Consumers Saying?

Many consumers are saying the calls they are getting from 800-359-4107 are for the wrong person or wrong number.

One person on YouMail reported that on December 2, 2024, “Collection agency asking for the wrong person.” Another person who posted on ShouldIAnswer said the caller was, “looking for someone else.” A YouMail user reported on September 12, 2025, “I have no debts.”

People are also complaining about the frequency of calls. A user on WhoCallsMe said the number “calls multiple times per day.” An 800Notes user said they get calls, “every week from this and other spoofed phone numbers for the scammers doing the MCM collection spam.”

One ShouldIAnswer user said the company was trying to collect for something that happened, “what they are trying to collect from in 13 years ago....wayyyy past statute of limitations...rough time in my life...bottom feeders!!”

That brings up an interesting point. In most states, there is a statute of limitations for collecting debts. That means after a certain period of time, collectors cannot sue you for debts.

Where Are They Calling From?

Midland Credit Management operates in all 50 states. However, the company seems to focus its efforts in some states more than others.

In 2019, the company filed 12,805 lawsuits in Los Angeles County alone. In Pennsylvania in early 2025, the company was filing about 500 lawsuits per week. The company seems to focus its efforts in states where consumer protection laws are more relaxed. It also seems to focus on states where courts allow it to file a high volume of lawsuits.

State laws play a role in debt collection. Some states have enacted stronger consumer protection laws than others.

For example, California, New York, Massachusetts, and Texas have laws that prohibit many of the activities that debt collectors engage in. In 2022, Massachusetts got $12 million in relief from MCM. The state alleged that the company was collecting debts without validating the debts and making harassing phone calls.

Why You Should Dispute Before You Verify

The credit reporting system is flawed. In fact, a study by the credit reporting industry found that 79 percent of credit reports have errors on them. If credit reports are wrong so often, consumers should question information on their reports.

Midland Credit Management places items on credit reports as part of its collection process. One person complained to the Better Business Bureau, saying, “I am not liable for this debt. I do not have a contract with Midland Credit Management, they did not provide me with the original contract as I requested.”

If a debt collector does not have the original contract or cannot establish a clear chain of ownership for a debt, it should not place items on credit reports. Instead of calling Midland Credit Management or verifying the debt first, you should dispute the item on your credit report.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act says debt collectors must validate debts when consumers ask. That means providing proof the debt is valid and the correct amount is owed. If you dispute the credit report item first, Midland Credit Management will have to provide documentation to validate the debt. If the company purchased your debt as part of a package of millions of debts for 3 cents on the dollar, it is unlikely to have all the documentation for your debt.

How to Get Midland Credit Management to Stop Calling You

A professional can help you deal with Midland Credit Management. If you talk directly to a debt collector, you put yourself in an adversarial position. The debt collector is trying to get money from you and has experience doing so.

One WalletHub user reviewed Midland Credit Management, saying, “A man from Midland Credit Management called my granddaughter and asked if she was my emergency contact. She immediately went into panic mode.” The company uses emotional manipulation to get consumers to pay debts.

If you hire a professional consumer advocacy company, it can take the emotional manipulation out of the equation. The company can help ensure your dispute is handled correctly and that you have the documentation you need to force the debt collector to validate the debt or remove it from your report.
