833-981-1372: Legit or a Scam? Here's How to Tell

GreenSky, LLC, an Atlanta, Georgia fintech consumer lender and loan servicer, is responsible for the calls from 833-981-1372. GreenSky is a loan servicer for accounts consumers are unaware are in their name, thus the calls.

You’re not alone if you’re receiving these calls. Over 46,000 calls from this number have been tracked by RoboKiller. 105 reports have been made by consumers labeling this number as spam or scam.

In 2021, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a joint enforcement action against GreenSky for $11.5 million. The action was brought because merchants were able to originate loans on the GreenSky platform without consumers’ authorizations.

Why is GreenSky calling me?

GreenSky is not a direct lender. The company provides a platform for home improvement contractors, healthcare providers, and retailers to offer their customers point-of-sale financing for goods and services.

GreenSky’s loans are originated by federally insured banks, but the loans are serviced by GreenSky. A consumer may receive calls from GreenSky if the consumer received financing from a contractor, but did not realize they were obtaining a GreenSky loan.

On ShouldIAnswer, a consumer reported a missed call from this number and said, caller claimed he was calling from “sky green” and I “didn’t give them any information.”

Why the calls appear like scams

While GreenSky is not a scam, the calls from the number 833-981-1372 appear as such.

For one, the number is not listed on any GreenSky contact page. GreenSky’s customer service number is (866) 936-0602, (844) 810-7713, and (855) 809-1889. GreenSky’s 833 number is not listed as a customer service number anywhere on their website. This makes it impossible for consumers to confirm the identity of the caller.

Consumers can’t call back the number to speak to a representative. The phone number is used as an outbound-only line, used for automated calls to remind consumers of payment due dates and delinquent loans. It’s likely for this reason the calls from this number have been universally flagged as spam by consumer blocking platforms.

Further confusing the issue, one voicemail transcript from this number is from a caller who claims to be “Jocelyn from Verizon,” a company unrelated to GreenSky. This raises the possibility that the number is used by a multi-client call center that makes calls on behalf of different companies, or that the number is being spoofed by third parties.

What they want

The Pressure Playbook

As discussed above, most debt collectors are not scams. Most are legitimate companies just trying to get consumers to pay up. GreenSky’s calls from this number are not different. GreenSky is employing the same tactics as most debt collectors to create a sense of urgency for consumers to pay now.

Josephine McQuail reported to 800Notes that she has received “numerous calls from this number” despite believing she owes no outstanding balance. DaveM1960 on YouMail labeled the callers “fraudsters, spammers and scammers.”

The calls have been labeled as spam or scam by many consumers, and it’s no wonder why. The calls are harassment, plain and simple. The voicemails left from this number are robo calls asking consumers to call the company back. Here is a YouMail transcript from one voicemail left from the number, “[Caller]: I was calling from Bella from Green...”

What to do?

Answering the phone is not the answer. It’s likely the first thing you want to do when you receive these calls. But picking up the phone can be the worst thing to do in this situation. When you answer the phone, you are letting the caller know they have the right phone number and the right person on the other end of the line.

If you pay the debt collector any amount of money, even if it’s just a partial payment, you may be acknowledging that the debt is valid. In many states, acknowledging the debt is valid can restart the clock on the statute of limitations for that debt. This means the debt collector has several more years to attempt to collect the debt from you.

Instead of calling GreenSky to attempt to settle the debt, we recommend challenging the debt with the credit reporting agencies.

The Paper Trail

If you’re receiving these calls, it’s likely there is a GreenSky account on your credit report. The credit reporting system is flawed, but there are ways consumers can use this system to their advantage.

Before disputing the GreenSky account with the credit bureaus, make sure you have a paper trail. Save your call logs from the number. Take screenshots of your phone with the number and date and time of calls. Save any voicemails left from the number. If the calls continue after you dispute the account with the credit bureaus, these can be used as evidence.

AnnualCreditReport.com allows consumers to request one free credit report a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Make sure to pull your reports to see if the GreenSky account is appearing. If it is, note the account number, balance, date opened and reporting status. These will come in handy when you draft your dispute letter to the credit bureaus.

Dispute the Account

If you are receiving calls from GreenSky, it’s likely because GreenSky has taken over the servicing of an account in your name. GreenSky has already proven their willingness to service accounts that were opened without consumers’ knowledge. Further, the company has already shown they don’t have the records for these accounts.

Allowing merchants to make loans in consumers’ names without their authorization is a big no-no. In fact, it’s a violation of consumers’ rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

When consumers bring a dispute about an account appearing on their credit report, the credit bureaus and the data furnisher (the company reporting the information) have a duty to investigate. If the data furnisher cannot verify the account with documentation, the credit bureau has a duty to remove the information from consumers’ credit reports.

Given GreenSky’s history, we believe the company will not be able to verify accounts consumers dispute. GreenSky has already proven they allow loans to be originated in consumers’ names without authorization. It’s likely GreenSky is now servicing accounts that were opened without authorization.

We believe GreenSky will not be able to provide documentation to verify accounts consumers dispute. If they cannot verify, the credit bureau has a duty to remove the account from the report entirely.

Do not settle. Do not pay. Remove.

What’s the best way to dispute?

If you have a GreenSky account on your credit report and are receiving calls from GreenSky, we recommend disputing the account with the credit bureaus.

Given the company’s history of allowing merchants to originate loans in consumers’ names without authorization, we believe GreenSky will not be able to verify accounts with documentation. The credit bureaus will then have a duty to remove the accounts from consumers’ credit reports entirely.

While we always recommend consumers attempt to dispute their own accounts, sometimes the process can be confusing.

If you have questions about the dispute process or would like the help of a professional, contact our office. Our credit repair lawyers at FightCollections.com have experience disputing credit report inaccuracies and can help you remove harmful information from your credit reports.
